Our Story

1968

Bob began his career walking packs of dogs at Jim Buck's School for Dogs  on New York City's Upper East Side. The following year, 1969, he began working for Captain Arthur J. Haggerty, training family pets, dogs for stage, screen, and TV, as well as commercial security and personal protection, along with training students and interns for a dog training career.

1972

Jai, a Great Dane owned and trained by Bob Maida, co-starred in the film "Shamus" along with Captain Haggerty, Burt Reynolds, and Dyan Cannon.

1974

Bob relocated to Western NY to manage Jamar's Dog Training/Boarding Kennels and, in 1976, moved to Alexandria, VA, to assist former Captain Haggerty co-workers Sandy and Carlos Mejias with the Olde Towne School for Dogs, a renowned day school for the urban/suburban dog in the Greater Washington DC Metro area.

1979

Bob decided to start his own business, which was home tutoring. A program where the dog was daily trained by Bob and staff throughout town, with dog owners getting guidance twice-weekly. An excellent program for the home-alone dog and the busy dog owner. In 1982, he acquired a training kennel, which incorporated in-town training along with resident children, household pets, livestock, and household visitors. Primarily designed for the difficult dog and/or the over-scheduled human companion.

1985

Bob had the pleasure of assisting our country's First Family with the First Dog via referrals from the Press and Defense Secretary. While in the DC-Northern VA area, Bob worked with many high-level Washingtonians, supplied/trained animals for classified projects, and produced/hosted the Northern Virginia FCAC Cable show 'The Pet Counselor'.

2009

Bob retired from the boarding school kennel and returned to the New York City Metro area, specializing in counseling dog owners at home in urban and suburban areas, in the very environment where the behaviors occur.

Our Approach

Bob's approach to solving a dog-human problem is teaching you better dog-human communication, handling skills, and how best to fulfill your furry friend's needs. You and your dog's happiness can be achieved with a balance of confident, positive energy, play, exercise, boundaries, rules, limitations, and affection.

Bob Maida does not believe in one-size-fits-all or cookie-cutter training. One must take into consideration the dog's temperament, environment, sensitivity level, and behavior history. When training a dog, one must realize dogs are different. What is effective with some dogs and/or human companions will not work with others. Of course, it is also understood that the trainer must work within the capabilities, limitations, and lifestyle of their two-legged companions.

Scheduling Is Key to Training

Our rules for dog training have always been to do no harm, maintain harmony, and accomplish training/behavior goals without violation of the trust your dog has in you. Wouldn't it be nice to take your dog anywhere? Let us show you how to take a stroll in the park... In fact, we can probably take you and your pooch on that stroll upon the very visit.
